Mt. Fuji may soon require off-season climbers to register with the government or pay for their own rescues, SoraNews24 reports. Forestry officials in Shizuoka, one of the two prefectures the mountain sits in, are getting set to take up the question now that this year's climbing season has finished.

Officials frame the ground as complicated on both sides: whether hiking Mt. Fuji outside the season is illegal is a complex question, and so is who should foot the bill when a rescue is needed.

Nothing is settled yet: officials are preparing to take up the question, and no registration rule or rescue fee is in force for the coming off-season.
